### Soft and clean

## Wearing perfume oil from day to night

A roll-on is easy to live with. Here’s how to get the most from one.

- **Keep one in your bag.** A 3 ml roll-on is small enough for any handbag, and a quick swipe refreshes your scent later in the day. 
- **Prepare your skin.** Scent tends to hold better on moisturised skin, so apply over an unscented lotion. 
- **Layer two oils.** A soft musk underneath a floral or fruity oil adds depth. Apply the musk first, let it settle, then add the second. 
- **Wear it under a spray.** If you love your usual perfume, put a complementary oil on first and spray over it. 
- **Change for the evening.** Keep a lighter oil for the day and add a richer one, such as a vanilla blend or one with oud notes, at night.

## Trying a scent properly

Fruity and floral oils can change a lot as they settle, so give each one a fair test. Smell it on your skin, not on the cap or a strip of paper, because skin warms the oil and brings out the base. Wait twenty minutes before you decide: the bright opening of strawberry or citrus usually settles into musk, vanilla or woods. Try one scent a day rather than three on different wrists, so you know which is which.
